MCCB ABB: Definition, How it Works, and Types

MCCB ABB is the most important electrical device in every electrical installation to prevent short circuits. How does it work, and what are the types?

In electrical installations, one of the important things that needs to be the main concern is preventing short circuits. Because this short circuit can cause a fire.

One of the electrical devices that is often used for electrical system needs, both in industry and households is a circuit breaker. There are several types of circuit breakers, including MCCB.

This electrical device can be used in industrial and household environments. For a more complete explanation of MCCB ABB, see below!

What Is MCCB ABB?
MCCB, or Molded Case Circuit Breaker, is a protective and current-breaking device that protects the circuit from overload or when a short circuit occurs, which can cause damage to the electric motor and fire due to sparks.

This device also has a switch that can be operated manually to disconnect the circuit. In MCCB, the trip level can be set by the user according to their needs. MCCB also has two settings, one for excess current and one for excess temperature. In addition, MCCB also usually consists of bimetallic contacts that will contract and expand when the MCCB temperature changes.

Unlike MCB, whose circuit breaker circuit is fixed, MCCB has a circuit breaker that can be moved.

Meanwhile, the function of this one electrical device is to protect the electrical circuit from overload and short circuit, automatically cut off the power supply when a disturbance occurs, and also prevent damage to electrical equipment.

How ABB MCCB Works?
The way ABB MCCB works is that the bimetallic contact will allow current to flow through the circuit during normal operating conditions. However, when the electric current increases beyond the set value, the contacts will heat up and expand until the contacts open. As a result, the circuit will be disconnected from the main supply to protect the equipment from damage.

MCCB can withstand higher currents, making it suitable for use at industrial and commercial levels.

ABB MCCB Types
As one of the electrical device manufacturers, ABB has many choices of MCCB products that can be adjusted to your needs. The following are the types of ABB MCCB:

1. ABB MCCB Formula DSA
ABB SACE also has the Formula series MCCB with three new frame sizes, namely A1, A2, and A3. The three frame sizes have different nominal currents, such as 125A for A1, 250A for A2, and 630A for A3.

This ABB SACE MCCB can be used in varying ambient temperature conditions, namely between -25 degrees Celsius and +70 degrees Celsius.

Specifications:

  • Available in single pole, two pole, and three pole up to 250A, and three and four pole up to 630A
  • Can be operated at an altitude of 2000 meters above sea level, without any decrease in work performance
  • MCCB ABB is equipped with an electronic trip unit, its protection operation is guaranteed not to be affected by interference caused by electromagnetic fields
  • There are complete accessories for this device, ranging from terminal connections, rotary handles, locking devices, terminal protective covers, and mechanical interlocks, that can be selected according to the needs and desired applications

2. MCCB ABB Formula DSP
Specifications:

  • Breaking Capacity (Icu) at 380/415 V AC voltage
  • The connection type is Front Terminal, while the installation type is Fixed Type
  • The protection/trip unit is TMD (distribution load protection)
  • Breaking capacity at 380/415V AC voltage and 3P or 4P options
  • There are three types of MCCB ABB Formula DSP, namely P1, P2, and P3
  • DSP P1 and P2 formulas are for 160-250A and there are two types, namely C (25 kA) and N (36 kA)
  • DSP P3 formula is for 320-630A, and there are also two types, namely N (36 kA) and S (50 kA)

3. ABB Tmax XT MCCB
The SACE Tmax XT MCCB series is available in seven frame sizes, namely Tmax XT1, Tmax XT2, Tmax XT3, Tmax XT4, Tmax XT5, Tmax XT6, and Tmax XT7. The devices are made to help ensure extreme performance and protection features up to 1200 amps.

This ABB SACE MCCB can be used in various ambient temperature conditions, namely between -25 degrees Celsius and +70 degrees Celsius.

Specifications:

  • Available in 3P and 4P
  • ABB Tmax Series MCCBs, both 3P and 4P, are available in fixed type
  • XT1 and XT3 types are available in plug-in versions. While XT2, XT4, XT5, XT7, are available in withdrawable versions
  • Thermal Magnetic trip units are offered up to 800 A, more efficient than electronic breakers
  • All Tmax series MCCBs can be operated (On and Off) manually by operating the lever or rotary handle and can also be operated electrically/automatically
  • Can be operated at an altitude of 2000 meters above sea level without any decrease in performance
  • Also equipped with an electronic trip unit whose protection is guaranteed not to be affected by interference caused by electromagnetic fields
  • Electrical aids that have a wide range ranging from shunt opening releases, voltage drop releases, auxiliary contacts, motor mechanisms with wide and complete working voltages
